New Painting: In a World Without Boats... II
In a World Without Boats... II, Oil on Panel, 12 x 12 in., 2016
Just finished this 12 x 12 image of the moon that's been sitting idle all summer. My miniature paintings are usually heavily contained by their boards: 2 x 3's, 5 x 5's, etc. The idea here was to do one on a larger board and surround it with absence (usually the frame does this job). The title is a reference to Foucault's "Of Other Spaces." If you would like to read it you can do so here.
This studio view allows for comparison with one of my more typical miniatures. The small red nebula painting sitting on the table is a 2 x 3 in., compared to the new 12 x 12 in. painting. One can also detect the chalkiness of the blacks from certain angles in the above photo. This will disappear once the painting is varnished.
An earlier version of this painting was produced in 2014 as a 5 x 5 in. Hence the "II" designation of the new picture. Above you can see this smaller version which uses its frame to extend the illusion of darkness instead of the panel itself. The new painting has a one inch bar so it will hang without a frame.
